Rameswaram Tours

Rameshwaram is a town and a second grade municipality in the Ramanathapuram district in Tamil Nadu. It is located on Pamban Island separated from mainland India by the Pamban channel and is about 50 kilometres from Mannar Island, Sri Lanka. It is situated in the Gulf of Mannar, at the very tip of the Indian peninsula. Pamban Island is connected to mainland India by the Pamban Bridge. Rameswaram is the terminus of the railway line from Chennai and Madurai. Together with Varanasi, it is considered to be one of the holiest places in India to Hindus, and part of the Char Dham pilgrimage.

Ramanathaswamy TempleThe Ramanathaswamy Temple is the most notable historic landmark of the town. Located in the centre of town, Ramanathaswamy Temple is a famous Hindu temple dedicated to the god Shiva. The temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlinga shrines, where Shiva is worshipped in the form of a Jyotirlinga meaning “pillar of light”.

DhanushKodiDhanushkodi is the southernmost tip of the island and houses the Kothandaramaswamy Temple dedicated to Rama. Though Dhanushkodi was washed away during the 1964 cyclone, the temple alone remained intact. It is 18 km way from the centre of the town and can be reached by road. A popular belief is that, Dhanushkodi is where Vibishana, a brother of Ravana surrendered before Rama in the epic Ramayana.

Pamban BridgeThe Pamban Bridge is a cantilever bridge on the Palk Strait which connects the town of Rameswaramon Pamban Island to mainland India. The bridge refers to both the road bridge and the cantilever railway bridge, though primarily it means the latter. Opened in 1914, it was India’s first sea bridge, and was the longest sea bridge in India till 2010.

Ramar PathamRamar Patham has the foot print of Lord Rama and is a sacred place for Hindus. Tourists are visiting Ramar padham and do prayers in this temple. From this Ramar patham, one can get the full view of Rameswaram and a good view of Dhanushkodi. In the first floor of Ramar Patham we can see the imprint of Ramar patham in a chakra.

AgnitheerthamThe calm, shallow water-spread of the sea, present hardly 100 metres in front of the magnificient temple Gopuram is reverentially held sacred. A dip in the Agnitheertham is supposed to remove the sins of the pilgrims. The other Theerthams (holy springs) in and around the temple are also important for pilgrims
