Madurai is one of the ancient Indian cities of South with a glorious history that has earned the sobriquet, Athens of the East is a place of great historical importance. Said to be the oldest city in South India Madurai stands on the banks of the sacred river Vaigai eternalized in Lord Shivas exploits in the HalasyaPurana. The city of Madurai has been constructed in the form of a lotus and is built around the temple. Owing to its rich cultural heritage and architectural splendor the city is often referred to as the Athens of the East.

Meenakshi AmmanThe shrine of Meenakshi at Madurai, popularly known as the Meenakshi Temple. The temple, as it stands today, was built between 12th and 18th century. Meenakshi Amman Temple can be entered from any of its five entrances. The eastern entrance is usually preferred, as it opens in front of the Meenakshi Sannadhi (shrine), the reigning deity of the twin-temple. This is the only entrance which does not have a towering gopuram.

Alagar KovilIn Alagar hills lord “Thirumal” is located in the name of “Alagar” and so it is called Alagar hills. This Vaishnavite temple has the unique reputation of the lord’s revelation to the Pandya king Malayathuaja Pandian and Dharma Devashai. The episodes of Alvars have added to the honour of the temple. One hundred and twenty three vaisnavite hymns describe the glory of the temple. Even in the epic Silappathikaram of the classical epic age, the greatness of the temple is beautifully described.

Thirumalai Nayakar Mahal AmmanThirumalai Nayak Palace is a 17th-century palace erected in 1636 AD by King Thirumalai Nayak, a king of Madurai’s Nayaka dynasty who ruled Madurai from 1623-59, in the city of Madurai, India. This Palace is a classic fusion of Dravidian, Islamic styles. The building, which can be seen today, was the main Palace where the king lived. The original Palace Complex was four times bigger than the present structure. In its heyday, Tirumalai Nayak Palace at Madurai was considered to be one of the wonders of the South.

Kochadai Village Deity TempleKochadai Village Deity Temple or Sri Aiyanar Swami Temple is located 5 Km from Periyar bus stand, Madurai. This temple is dedicated to Lord Aiyanar (Aiyanar). There are 21 deities in this temple. Since this god is very powerful no horse or carts drawn by horses are allowed in the temple vicinity. The sthala (place) vruksham (tree) of the temple is Tamarind tree. Devotees pour milk to Nagamma under the Tamarind tree, for the removal of Naga Dosha (curse of the snake).

ThiruparankundramThiruparankundram is an ancient temple which is 2000 years old, dedicated to Lord Murugan / Karthikeya. There are 11 famous ponds around the temple, out of which, Saravanapoigai and Lakshmi Theertham are very famous. This temple is not only worshipped by Hindus, but also by the Muslims. There is also a Muslim shrine here, dedicated to ‘Sekunder’. This shrine is associated with Murugan by the Muslim pilgrims. It is believed that Sekunder was a friend of Muruga.

Koodal Azhagar KovilKoodal Azhagar Koil is a famous Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu located in the center of the city of Madurai, Tamilnadu, India. Koodal is another name for Madurai and Azhaghar means The beautiful one, in Tamil. The temple is an ancient one and very close to the famous Meenakshi Amman Temple. It is one of the 108 divyadesams the holy abodes of Vishnu.

Vandiyur Mariamman TempleVandiyur Mariamman Temple is located in east of the temple city Madurai, TamilNadu, India. It is dedicated to Mariamman, the Hindu Goddess of rain. It is situated near to river Vaigai at a distance of about 3 km from the Meenakshi Amman Temple. Temple has its huge pond Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam. Although Mariammam Shrine is the prime shrine, temple has pechiammam and vinayagar beside the pipal tree. Two dwarapalakis located on the entrance of Mariammam shrine.

Yanai Narasimhar TempleYanai Malai Yoga Narasimhar (GajaGiri Kshetram). A less known 5000 year old cave temple, Narasimha temple is at the foothills of Yaanamalai Madurai. This temple is a good example for the cave sculpturing during the Pandiya period.

Solamalai (Pazhamudhirsolai)Prasanna Venkatachalapathy temple is a famous Vishnu temple in Gunaseelam. Pilgrims stay here for about 48 days ,worship God and partake the prasadam from the temple and get relief from their problems. The temple is noted for treating those mentally distarded. There is a rehabilitation centre for the patients. They are made to sit in the shrine during the afternoon and night poojas. The abishek theertha is spilled on their face.

Pandi Munisvarar KovilPandi kovil was located in madurai, the main lord of this temple “pandi muniswarar” he was the savior(Kaaval theivam) of madurai. The lord pandi was actually an ancient ruler of madurai who related with the tamil epic “Silapathikaram”. People pray the lord for their wellness.
